Sony may be unveiling a number of big announcements before E3, but they are still saving some biggies. Here's one rumor that has been around the net: Sony will be launching a paid subscription service version for PSN, similar to Xbox Live in price. While I can't confirm when this service will be announced, I can confirm that it is indeed coming, and changes will come with it.[nextpage]

This comes from confirmation from a 3rd party developer and a Sony exec. However, there are no other specific details at this point for the service. We don't have confirmation yet if the service will provide some straight online access just to play games online, but it will be bundled what a number of extras to justify the price structure. Sony has been saying that what is free right now won't change. However,

One trend you’ll see in my quest to capture 4000 unique experiences in life is that I’ll go back and do things that I should have done when I lived at a certain place. You know what I’m talking about. When I lived in Washington DC, I never once set foot in the Washington Monument. And when I was in NYC, I never checked out the Statue of Liberty. And when I went to college at UVA down in Charlottesville, I never once went to Monticello, the place where Thomas Jefferson lived. The same guy who founded UVA. Funny thing is, whenever friends come and visit me, I always tell them to check out the Washington Monument, or Monticello, or the Statue of Liberty…

So when I lived down in LA, I never once did a tour of a movie studio lot. Yes, you can do that, and generally they

We been riding waves of nostalgia as we wrapped up 2009 and ushered in a new decade. It's hard enough trying to collect your thoughts for a look back at one year, but traveling down memory lane for the last 10 years is akin to a cross country road trip.[nextpage]

But what made all this fun and enlightening was our collaborative approach to compiling our thoughts. We put together a list of defining moments from the big three console makers, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, and I must say it is a well researched piece because it involved a good handful of people to put it all together. We also looped in some community members and they shared their thoughts on memories moments in games.

Few gamers have heard of a recent legal battle between Hillcrest Labs and Nintendo, and the ones that have had written it off as another attempting at patent trolling. The lawsuit claimed that Nintendo infringed on various patents owned by Hillcrest when it came to motion control. Hillcrest labs is a venture backed start up that has raised over $50 million to date, and invested heavily to create the next generation of motion controls.

So what happened to that lawsuit? Nintendo decided to settle last Aug, with no admission of guilt. So while it's not clear what would have happened if the battle went all the way through court, what is clear is that the technology Hillcrest Labs has invented is now of keen interest to every console developer.[nextpage]

According to a series of reports from DFC Intelligence, sales for iPhone games are expected to command about 24% of total portable game sales by 2014.

“The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked. The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years,” says DFC analyst David Cole.

It's clear that the iPhone competitive threat is real, as both Sony and Nintendo have both launched enhanced versions of their handheld systems that now offer an apps store similar to the one on the iphone. In July, Nintendo had already indicated that sales for their DS system could be hampered ongoing by the iPhone threat.[nextpage]
